THE BASICS

What is Incite, exactly?

IN SHORT,

Incite makes history easier.

Incite is a free, open source tool for crowdsourced exploration of document archives. With it, citizen archivists can transcribe digitized documents to make them searchable; tag people, locations, organizations and events with help from natural language processing tools; connect documents to high-level concepts of interest; and discuss their discoveries in context. It is a plug-in for Omeka and helps scholars uncover relevant sources in Omeka archives. Omeka is a free, flexible, and open source web-publishing platform for the display of library, museum, archives, and scholarly collections and exhibitions.

Incite is the solution you've been searching for.

Incite supports several crowdsourced tasks relating to your digital archives including transcribing, summarizing, tagging, connecting, commenting, and discussing.
ONE

Transcribe & Summarize

Incite allows users to transcribe images into searchable digital text documents. Once the document is transformed into a digital document, Incite asks users to summarize each document they’ve worked on. This summation of the tone, time period, and large details of the document, serves as a short, searchable introduction to the document.
TWO

Tag

Incite offers tagging, allowing users to identify and classify entities in the historical documents, such as dates, names, locations, etc. Tagging creates an easier search flow, allowing users to filter documents by each contained tag, as well as free tags, like "exciting" or "interesting".

THREE

Connect

Users can also connect these historical documents to related topics that historians use for research, creating a high-level historical database.

FOUR

Comment & Discuss

Along with creating sets of data, Incite also serves as a social platform for users. We can make comments in-document while working on any task in the translation process, helping to further understand the document or its process. Users can also discuss topics between documents, regarding some topics relating to several historical documents and photos.
LEARNING, SIMPLIFIED.
Classroom & Group Use
Our implementation of class and group use encourages educators to use this tool to create group and class activities, allowing you to give specific instruction to your students and monitor their activities.

Students

As crowdworkers, students are able to transcribe, summarize, and tag documents to better and further understand the context of selected documents. It also allows them to research and discuss these documents in a brand new environment.

Educators

Educators can use Incite as a tool to give their students some insight on true historical documents, while simultaneously adding to the numerous digital archives of historical texts and data.

Assignments

Educators can assign student crowdworkers different tasks in group and individual settings.

Track Progress

Group and Individual progress is recorded and shared with educators to see how their students are progressing.

Discussion

Discussion boards allow both educators and students to dicuss and share different documents within the archives.
